Mersey Gateway Bridge
- MCCJV (Joint venture with Kier / Samsung & FCC)
- Approx £6.5m (labour & plant)
About This Project
McFour were engaged by MCCJV as the principal drainage contractor on the project to build a new bridge over the River Mersey. This road links Runcorn and Widnes and is one the main access routes to and from Liverpool from the M56. The works also consisted of the upgrading of approximately 10km of existing dual carriageway. McFour works consisted of all highway drainage, existing United Utilities sewer diversions, attenuation and outfall drainage. Pipe diameters ranged from 100mm up to 1800mm with depths down to in excess of 10m deep on some parts of the contract. Throughout the project we encountered varying ground conditions ranging from sandstone rock which was removed by extensive ripping and breaking to highly contaminated existing post-industrial ground, which required extensive ground remediation and containment measures.
